FIELD TRIPS & RECEPTION

Rutgers University RU COOL Lab
The Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RUCOOL) on the main New Brunswick campus is creating knowledge of our ocean planet by pushing the limits of science and new technologies while inspiring future generations of ocean explorers. Our faculty, staff and students are engaged in research that spans extreme weather events like hurricanes, to polar science and environmental considerations with the introduction off offshore wind energy to the US. This tour will introduce you to RUCOOL science and technology and its role in supporting the offshore wind industry.

Stockton University Marine Field Station
The Stockton University Marine Field Station (MFS) in Port Republic, NJ is home base for the Stockton Marine and Coastal programs and the Stockton fleet.  The MFS is surrounded by the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Forsyth Refuge of the USFWS and extensive state lands.  The MFS supports research and teaching in the marine environment including beach and dune protection, including work on harbor seals artificial reefs, hydrology, oyster reef and seagrass restoration and marine archaeology.

Rutgers University Marine Field Station
For more than 50 years, the Rutgers University Marine Field Station at Tuckerton has been sampling and sensing the marine and estuarine environments of Little Egg Harbor and the Great Bay.  Surrounded by salt marsh and poised at the mouth of an active ocean inlet, data collected here is used to inform coastal fisheries, communities, and industries about the ways in which our marine environment is adapting, and establishes a baseline for research on the impacts of offshore wind farms on the ocean before, during and after construction.

New Jersey is making historic investments in offshore wind. With multiple projects already approved, another solicitation in the works, and the first purpose built wind port in the country, our state is creating thousands of job opportunities. How can offshore wind serve as an engine to address climate change and reverse inequality? This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ensure jobs go to communities often excluded from the green economy. This panel will take a look at what New Jersey is doing, and what we have left to do, to remove structural barriers to good jobs in offshore wind.
